The Campbell Memorial HPAC Group
- Campbell is a suburb of Youngstown, Ohio with characteristics of most urban areas: poverty, unemployment, and crime. Oftentimes these problems spawn others such as malnutrition, child abuse, and neglect. Last year, the Campbell Memorial High School HPAC group constructed a three-year plan that focused on the child abuse and neglect present in the Campbell community. The United Way and Neighborhood Ministries are both agencies with strong ties to the Campbell community offering services such as after school programs, backpack programs, and job training.
- During the 2013-2014 school year, the HPAC members researched child abuse and neglect and presented their findings at the NEOMED Scholar’s Day. The second leg of the three-year plan unfolded this year with a “Walk for Awareness.” We met two – four times a month outlining our community resources, program design, and community assets. We were fortunate enough to gain community support from several independently owned painting companies who made monetary donations to the group. In addition, one local supermarket chain and one national drug store chain donated perishables and nonperishables for our event. Finally, agency representatives from Neighborhood Ministries and Mahoning County Children’s Services were invited to speak at our weekly meetings as well as share their expertise at the walk.

STRENGTHS
Campbell schools have many beneficial aspects to offer to their community. Their proficiency testing scores are above the states average. Schools offer reduced prices for homeless or kids in poverty settings. The schools offer programs for disabled children, an after school program at the elementary schools, and a safe transportation system. The library offers a great source of resources for anyone in the community. Campbell has a variety of colleges and vocational training less than or about 30 minutes away for young and older adults to attend.
WEAKNESSES
Unfortunately, Campbell is a poor neighborhood and there are not too many services that have reduced prices in the community. Many children drop out simply because the cost is too high or adolescents have to drop out to get a job to help support families. There needs to be more homeless/poverty services for this community.
